Hoopoe...Upupa epops...Abubilla

One of the most striking birds of the region. The body is a buff pink with black and white striped broad and rounded wings. Most often spotted in orchards, vineyards and open woodland. On landing and when agitated the crest is raised for a  second or two.

Feeds on insects and worms found on the ground. Can often be seen probing small holes for grubs.

Nests in holes in trees or wall cavities.

The call is an unmistakeable “oop oop oop” repeated many times.

Although most reference books state that the hoopoe winters in Africa we have found that they can be seen all year so possibly the migration behaviour is changing or individuals from the north are wintering in the south of Spain whilst the Southern Spanish birds move to Africa.
