Close to the Sierra de Grazalema are several large bodies of water created for land irrigation and hydro electric projects. These large lakes are home to a vast array of aquatic and waterside wildlife.

The village of Zahara de la Sierra has the closest lake to us. It is surrounded by olive groves and Mediterranean scrubland. Golden eagles were seen frequently this summer hunting for rabbits along the shoreline. Egyptian vultures can sometimes be spotted walking along the shoreline in search of amphibians and carrion.
Twenty minutes away is another lake, close to the town of Bornos. During the breeding season this lake is a host to many types of aquatic bird. Purple heron, Grey heron, Night heron, Egrets and White stork are in great abundance. Ospreys were present all year and seen feeding at their favourite tree many times.
The next lake in the chain is at Arcos de la Frontera. This is connected to the Bornos lake by a canal/river which is about 5 kilometres long. This canal surrounded by farmed land is the best place to find Marsh harriers, Purple herons and Purple swamp hens.
Also within an hours drive of Grazalema are the lakes of Hurones and Guadalcacin to the south west. A smaller lake called Torre de aguila and the marshland of Espera are to the northwest.
